My Hamster Cookie, always tries to get out of her cage, she got out last night and i can't find her! I would be very grateful if you can give me some advice.

Answer
Hi Arianne

Sorry to hear that Cookie has gone walkabout.

Do you know what room she is likely to be in?  If you call her then stand really quietly can you hear her at all?  I usually do this if I have an escapee - then I look under all the furniture and behind cupboards.  I have a long stick that I carefully run under the chairs and along the skirting board behind furniture - if a hamster is there either I disturb them or they get spooked and make a noise.  Remember that hamsters can get into tiny spaces even behind furniture that is flush against the wall.  They can also climb so look up high too in case she managed to climb up curtains (or even stairs).

If there is no sign for her then the best thing is to place a small amount of her favourite food in each room (if you're not totally sure what room she is in) then close the door to that room and check in the morning to see if the food has gone.  Place it close to to a skirting board as they tend to follow these rather than head into the open room. Try to give her something that you can count out - like 6 sunflower seeds etc. That way you definitely know if any are missing.  Don't put too much food out otherwise she'll take it and store it somewhere.  It is also worth placing a towel along the bottom of any closed doors so that she can't move from one room to the next. If there are any holes/gaps in the room do not block these off in case you trap her.

Once you have identified which room she is in then you can narrow your search.

Another way to try and get her back is to leave her cage at floor level with the door open so that she can walk back into it if she wants to.  You can also set a trap - if you pile up some books to make 'steps' then place a bucket with some of her bedding in the bottom and some of her favourite food, sometimes hamsters will walk up the 'steps' and when they reach the top they fall into the bucket and can't get out.

Whatever happens do not give up on her.  I have heard of hamsters who have turned up weeks later so it is important to keep looking for her.  Once she returns it is important to make sure she can't get out again!

I do hope she turns up soon.

Regards
Sheila
