Question
Hello, I am really worried about my 2 year old gerbil. This morning, I
found him this morning rolling around on his back and since then he has
just been laying down, unable to move. We thought he was about to die
but 9 hours later, he is still alive but still not moving. A few
minutes ago, he tried to walk but fell. I have searched the Internet and it
looks like he has had a stroke. I am worried about him also because he
will not open his mouth so he cannot eat. What do you think is wrong and
what do you recommend I do? (PS, We are unable to go to any vets). I have asked other people from allexperts and they dont know what to do, you are my last chance.
Please could you e-mail the answer to me on swapitshopryan@yahoo.co.uk.
Please reply urgently because I need help. Thanks, Ryan.

Answer
Hello Ryan,
it does sound like a serious stroke. When it comes to a stroke not even a vet would be able to do anything. There is really nothing that can be done for yo ur gerbil. Strokes seem to be common among older gerbils and there is no known cure to reverse the effects of a stroke. The only thing you can try to do is to feed your gerbil through a feeding syringe by mashing up his food and giving it to him through a feeding syringe. For mashing up food i think mazuri hamster and gerbil diet pellets are the best for hand feeding. You will need to give your gerbil water as well and see if there is any improvement.
