QuestionMy baby winter white is 3 weeks old. I had separate him from his mother. His eyes only one side open. The other side still close. What shall I do to help him?
AnswerHi Ping Ping
Usually hamsters open their eyes when they are about 2 weeks old, however, sometimes they are slower. Is there any sign of any pus/discharge coming from the unopened eye? Does it look like there is an eye there? It is possible for hamsters to be born with no eyes, but usually both eyes are missing, rather than just one and in these cases it just looks like they are sleeping. This is a genetic problem.
If there is any sign of any pus or discharge or crustiness around the unopened eye it might be worth getting some warm water on a cloth and gently wash the area and see if this helps.
I think it is a case of waiting for the eye to open naturally, however, if there is any discharge it would be advisable to get a vet to check it out as it may need treating with antibiotics.
Hopefully this situation will resolve itself.
