food in tubes

Question
my hamster Norman is 8 weeks old and he has started putting his food in the tube that connects the top to the bottom of his cage. he is sleeping alot is this normal?

Answer
Your hamster seems like he has chosen this area as a hoard. Hamsters hoard their food in areas around their cage, to simulate living in burrows like they do in the wild. There isn't much you can do to discourage this except add other hiding spaces to the cage that may appeal to the hamster more then the tubes. Sleeping a lot is also normal, it may appear that your hamster is sleeping more then he really is. Hamsters are nocturnal, meaning they sleep all day long, and are up for periods at night time, when you are sleeping.
