QuestionI HAVE A CHINESE DWARF HAMSTER THAT I WAS TOLD WAS A BOY. IT IS ONLY ABOUT 3MONTHS OLD. I WAS CLEANING ITS CAGE TODAY AND NOTICED A BULGE BETWEEN ITS TAIL AND BACK LEGS THAT WAS NOT THERE BEFORE. COULD IT BE A GIRL AND PREGNANT?
AnswerHi Candance!
Chinese dwarf hamsters are rather difficult to breed in captivity - the most difficult of all the hamster species (in fact, it's not a true hamster, it's a rat-like hamster) and most of the rodents kept as pets. So I rather doubt that your hamster is pregnant, even though the odd unplanned litter has been known to occur.
What you are probably seeing is your hamster's testes, which indicates that you do, indeed, have a boy hamster. Congrats! :)
Just in case, keep an eye on the bulge, and if it seems to be getting bigger, call a veterinarian.
