Hamster Fall

Question
Hi I have a robo dwarf hamster. Yesterday night, he escaped out of his cage. I found him on the carpet, but his cage is on the dresser. Do you think he fell? The height is about 2 feet from the dresser to the floor. If he did fall, would he be okay? I got him 3 days ago,so i dont know if his behavior is normal. I dont see any wounds or anyhting, but if he fell, would there be an internal injury?

Answer
Hi Jessie

Ideally you don't want your hamster to fall as they can break bones or suffer internal injuries.  However, I have had several who have escaped from cages and climbed/fallen a good few feet.  It really depends on how well they landed as to whether or not they suffer any injuries.

If your hamster is behaving normally then I would be tempted not to worry.  Check that when he walks he is using all his legs and not dragging any or favouring one side.  If there are any changes in his behaviour, then it would be worth getting him checked out, but hopefully he is fine.

Sheila
