is my hamster depressed?

Question
last Thursday my roommates and I bought two teddy bear hamsters from PetCo. We bought the same food, litter, cages and the hamsters were even from the same litter. Since then, their hamster has been very active and alert. My hamster sleeps all day AND all night. The only time he wakes up is to eat or to go to a different corner to sleep. Sometimes I see him shaking like he's shivering. He also holds his ears back a lot. He hardly moves around and when I try to talk to him and play with him he seems very apathetic. The only time I've ever seen him run in his wheel is when I took him back to the pet store because I thought he was sick. When I brought him back to my apt he was back to sleeping and not moving much. Is this normal for hamsters? What do I have to do to make him like my roommate's hamster where he can actually be awake long enough for us to play with him?

Answer
Dear Sarah,
thank you for your question.
While some hamsters just sleep more than others, your hamster is probably sick (shivering, apathetic behaviour ect., that's not normal). Please take him to a vet as soon as possible to find out what's wrong. It might be that your roommates' hamster has the same disease and it's not broken out yet.
I hope I was of some help to you
Jennifer
