I think my gerbil is sick.

Question
My gerbil had gained a lot of weight last month, at first I thought it was because she ate to much so I gave her less food, and haven't have her any fattening treats.. but that didn't help, and she just got fatter! I'm very worried about her. She's 3 years old. And last night I went to check on her, and her eyes were shut and still are! I just want to know what's wrong with her so I can help her. My mom won't let me take her to the vet. She could possibly have a tumor or cancer, she's breathing really fast.. I'm thinking she might die.): Does anyone know what's wrong?

Answer
Hi Taliah

thanks for your question.

I'm afraid your gerbil does sound as though she is very sick.  Three years old is very good for a gerbil.

It is hard to know exactly what is wrong, but this could well be a tumor, or ovarian cysts.  Either can make the gerbil appear to gain weight in this way. Or it could be enlarged kidneys.

The important thing is making sure she isn't in any pain and for this reason I would advise you get her to a vet.  I appreciate that vets can be expensive, but if you phone one or two and see if they specialise in small animals, they may offer a considerably reduced fee for a gerbil.  Always check before you go so you don't end up with an unexpectedly huge bill.

If you did take her to a vet they might recommend euthanasia if they feel they cannot help her, or they may prescribe pain relief.  Metacam is an anti-inflammatory that is safe to use on a gerbil.

However, in the meantime, I suggest you make sure her cage is easy for her - make sure there is plenty of food and water nearby so she doesn't have to go looking for them. Also remove any platforms so that everything is on one level for her.

I'm sorry I can't offer more advice on this.  I hope you get on OK.

Regards
Sheila
