Chi-Weiner Behavior after mating?

Question
Hi! I have 1 year old Chi-Weiner Dog mix and she has just gone through her second heat cycle. Last Friday she had gotten out and was gone for hours (not her usual self) and after that she got real sick for days. We took care of her and she's back to being herself again. Well I guess the male dog she was running with followed her home and won't leave our house. He made a bed underneath my husband's Bobcat out front. My son's let him into our backyard yesterday and I found them locked together. I know not to mess with them and they'll separate on they're own. After they released she came inside, climbed inside her kennel and laid they're making strange yelping cries then threw up. She laid on the couch all night, didn't move at all. Then this morning when i woke up she was back to herself jumping all over me wagging her tail and jumping on my husband. When my husband left for work the male dog was laying on our porch so he let him inside. I was trying to keep them separated but when you have 4 boys and one is 10 months old you get a little distracted lol. I had gone out of the laundry room and when I came back they were locked together again. After that she threw up twice this time and she's been laying in her kennel making those strange yelping sounds again. The male has been sitting outside of the kennel and even climbed inside with her and laid with her. My question is, is this normal behavior after mating? She's never mated before could she be traumatized by this and what should I expected over the next few days and watch for her being pregnant? Thank you! Sorry it's so long but I wanted to explain the situation thoroughly. :)

Answer
Hi Melanie

It's important to get all the information, or as much as possible.

What is even more important.  Is finding out what you can about the male. Does he have his shots?  Does he have any inherent health issues? And what breed is he and is he a carrier of any STD's?  This can adversely affect a litter and the dam.  The breeds she is mixed with carry their own health issues and "too many cooks in the kitchen and spoil the soup".  So you'll want to find out what you can about him.

Throwing up, lose stool and becoming lethargic are can all be signs of pregnancy. She many not show any further signs for a month or more.

Good luck
