starting a Shiz-Tzu breeding small business from my home

Question
I currently have three shih-tzu dogs, an eight year old female, a four year old male, and a seven month old male.  The youngest is registered.  I would like to buy a registered female and mate my youngest to this female to sell.  I would like to expand this and start a little business called "Precious Paws Puppies".  This is actually my lifelong dream. My husband is on disability.  What can I do to prepare for my big adventure.  We already have a puppy nursery area to prepare.  I am very excited about this.  I love these dogs so much.  any information that I need to know, please let me know.  Ovviously, I need to learn more about whelping and such.  I will educate myself regarding this subject. However, which age can puppies breed? does it usually work the first time.  what age is too young or too old.  how long is the gestation period?  Thank you soo much, any info will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Mary

1. Puppies should never be bred.  A female should wait at least past her second heat.  But that depends on the mental and physical health of the female.

2.  It doesn't always work the first time.  Timing is everything.

3.  Anything under a year is to young to breed, anything over 8 is too old (again each dog is different and mental and physical health play a large part)

4.  Gestation is 64 days from OVULATION.

I would recommend taking a course.  Check with your local clubs (any breed will do) and AKC or CKC to see if there is beneficial seminar or course you can take.

Good luck!
