Question
My dog just had puppies.  After the birth of the puppies she did not want the puppies to nurse.  However, after 24 hours she allowed them to nurse. She doing something perculiar.  She picks up the same puppy and holds it in her mouth and then tries to take it to a different location.  Is this normal and why is she doing this?

Answer
Is this her first litter? I'm a bit concerned that the puppies did not nurse for 24 hours. That first milk right after whelping contains antibodies that help protect the puppies from disease and build their immune system. Your puppies did not get that if they did not feed immediately after whelping. It sounds as though your dog is trying to find a better place for her litter. Did you provide a whelping box?
