Housebroken dog suddenly not so housebroke

Question
QUESTION: Hi. I have a 2 year old whippet mix that I have had for around a year. She was spayed and housebroken when I adopted her. She stays in the house when I am home, and in her backyard during the day which she loves. During last winter she stayed in the house because it gets too cold for her to stay in the house. She sleeps in the house under my bed and we have never had any accidents until last week. She has peed and pooped in corners of 2 different rooms of my house. She was doing it during the middle of the night so I began confining her to the bedroom. This evening I was in the living room and she went off (which she frequently does to check on the cats) and I got up to get something and saw that she had pooped and peed in the same spot that she had been going. I know the first step is to take her to the vet, but I don't think that it is medical since she has been pooping and peeing. How can I re-train her, but still allow her to be in her yard during the day? Thanks.

Lauren

ANSWER: Lauren,
I'm confused, you say you leave her in the house because it gets too cold in the house.   And you say how can you retain her  to be in her yard during the day.    Is she allowed to go to the bathroom in her yard and if so, then why cant you let her out during the day?  Maybe that is why she is going in the house because she cant go out during the day.  I think you need to answer these questions for me so i understand.
In the mean time, she could also have a bacterial infection which makes her have to go more often.  or something in her food may have changed?  is she getting into the cat boxes???? that can make them go.    Or has something changed in the household.
One thing you can do is crate her for awhile and see if that helps.
when you confine her to the bedroom does she go there?
Make sure you get an enzyme cleaner and clean those to spots she is going in very well.
Waiting to hear from you

QUESTION: Sorry, I was typing at work and didn't re-read. She stays in the backyard all day when it is warm. When it is winter and cold, she stays in the house. She isn't confined when she stays in the house, until recently and I have been confining her to my bedroom. She did not go to the bathroom in there. She is supposed to go the bathroom in her backyard and always has until now. She went to the bathroom in the house during the night a couple of nights in a row and then did the same thing while I was home just hanging out during the day. She could have easily gone out if she wanted to. It is possible that she is getting in the litterbox. Nothing has changed in the house and neither has her food. She eats Science Diet Adult formula. I have read a lot about crate training, but she has never been crated before. Can I leave her out during the day and then crate her at night?

Answer
Ok,
so have a stool sample checked to make sure she hasn't picked anything up.
Then  I'm thinking that she doesn't want to go out in the cold.  Have you brought her over to what she has done and scolded her and put her outside?
also can you put her out with a sweater on?  I have to leave mine out in the cold and they leave their coats on all day.  They have dog houses too, so they can get out of the weather.

If she has been in more, then that could also be another reason.  She is holding it during the day and then has to go at night.

If you find the stool is clear, I would guess she doesn't want to go out in the cold.   She can be crated at night.  Get her an oversized crate since she is not used to it and start by feeding her in it and not confining her in it.   See if that helps the situation.  I know I'm all over the place here, but I am on my way out and I'm rushing this to you
Good luck and get back to me with whatever you find out.
