Question
hello i have a 5 month old male Yorkie-shih tzu and we have had him since he was 7 weeks old, we started house training as soon as we brought him home.  He stays in a crate when we are not home and at night to sleep.  He will not alert me to go outside and pees and poops on the carpet.  If i catch him in the spot he runs away and when i take him out he wont do anything, then he just finds somewhere else to hide and do his business. I give him a treat and tell him he is a good boy when he goes outside to pee and poop. I take him out first thing in the morning and every 45 mins to an hour when im home but he still pees and poops sometimes on the floor.  If i take him out and he does not do anything he has to stay tied up on his leash by the door, i just do  not understand what im doing wrong my vet has given me advice and i have tried everything she says to do.  we don't scold him if i catch him but its all the times i don't catch him that i cant even find to clean up but i know he peed somewhere because his fur there is wet.  I shampooed my carpets and that didn't seem to make any difference, it just seems he wants to pee in the house and i do not want that i have never even encouraged him to do it in the first place, all i want is for him to go to the door and let me know i have to go out!!!!  Please help i love him dearly and i fear if this don't get better my husband will say we have to get rid of him.

Answer
The best way of using a crate is to also use it when you are home as well as at night and when you are out-in fact keep him in there and let him out every two hours or so,so keep him in there all the time except to be fed,to go outside,to go out,go on walks ect and do this for about three weeks and slowly let him out of the crate more,if he makes another accident, back in the crate he goes for a week
