Question
I hope you can help me please? I have a 7 MO old female I cannot have my front door or can I just trust to take her out to use the potty with out a leash she dashes off runs away and Have tried everything from spanking her, scolding her, and everything else. Do you think a shock collar will make her stay in the yard or maybe if she had a litter of puppies will that calm her down I know it calmed down our boxer. I can use any suggestion thank you reply as soon as you can

Answer
Schnauzers do not respond well to shock collars; it makes them aggressive or extremely fearful. Nor does having puppies calm a dog down... only time can do that... with some dogs. My first schnauzer acted like a puppy her entire life, and she had a couple litters.

What you need to do is get your puppy into obedience classes for a few months and work with her every single day. Start practing "Nothing in Life is Free" with her, and everyone in the family must follow through with this. http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm

If you are not going to fence your yard, then you MUST take her outside on a leash. Puppies have a "flight period" at around 3-4 months of age, and it lasts for several weeks. Once a dog learns that it can run off during that time, that behavior in and of itself becomes rewarding to the dog so it will continue to do it.

Teach her to come when called (in the house) by rattling some kibble in a metal bowl and giving her a treat when she comes, with LOTS of praise. Once she is doing this consistently inside, then start doing it outside, but have her on a long line so that she cannot get away from you. Practice this every day, and once she is coming well, then only reward with praise and no treat every third time or so. You need to mix it up so that she will never know when she will get the treat for coming. This is called random reinforcement, and works sort of like a slot machine. (We continue to pull that lever because we are sure that those coins will come clinking down on our next pull...) Eventually, you should be able to call her every time with only praise for reward, but don't eliminate the treats too soon or she may regress and start running again.

Also, the obedience training will help you to teach her to sit/stay when the door is opened.
