Bitches do frequently rest for an hour or so between puppies, but if your bitch is shutting down, you need the help of a veterinarian. There might be a problem, such as a mispresenting puppy, a dead one, or two coming down at the same time. If she is in hard labor for more than two hours with no results, you also have a major problem. Don't wait too long before contacting your vet.
