Question
Hi Melissa
I am looking to purchase a toy or miniature poodle and have been talking to various breeders/handlers; one person said that with respect to the purebred poodle, black poodles tend to have less illnesses especially around skin diseases....any idea if this has any truth to it?

Answer
Hello Ann;
What you are probably hearing about is the fact that the Black gene will be the most dominant, and this will bring the least amount of health issues possibilities vs. the other colors, with their recessive makeup!
That is a true possibility, and the idea of there are more chances of diseases with rare dogs, and rare colors can be a reality with the dogs usually being bred closely to get that particular gene trait to come through...thus, go to a reputable breeder of many years, with lots of references, and examples of dogs they have sold in the past, with a sound health guarantee!
Get their Vet as a professional reference.
Best of luck!
Enjoy your new dog.
Sorry for the delay, due to weather,
Regards,
Melissa
