Question
Hello. I have heard that too many vitamins and supplements may actually do a dog harm. This is a concern to me since I do take care of my dog quite well. I feed him "Wellness for puppy" dog food in the morning and at night mixed with 1 scoop of "Animal Naturals puppy gold" powdered supplement. At midday I give him a raw turkey neck. So in all he gets fed 3 times a day. I also give him a daily NuVet-Plus vitamin tablet. Is all this actually too much good stuff for my dog? I have a 4 1/2 month old pitbull. Hopefully you are familiar with the supplements and companies I referred to. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Actually I may know a lot less about them than some others here.  But then I may know more about what is actually good for dogs.  It is quite simple, cheap and easy too.  Nobody, that I would trust, knows more about raising dog to have a long, active, healthy life than the service dog schools.  They aren't selling anything, just giving away very valuable dogs.  I am familiar with the practices of several besides the the dog guide school that my family has raised puppies for for years.  I see thousands of dogs thriving on diets many rant and rave about what terrible ingredients go into them.  Most of the schools are feeding a common brand of dog chow and nothing else, no additives, supplements, etc.  I know they have looked at many different diets.  They have all selected one or another of the common brands.  It would be foolish to scrimp on chow for a dog you spend the price of a fine automobile on training it.

As far as I know, you can continue the Wellness puppy chow, but just cut out everything else.  An expensive chow should have everything in it your puppy needs.  If it doesn't, go to one of the well proven brands such as Pro Plan, Eukanuba, Science diet, etc.

I don't know how to deal with things such as hot spots, dandruff, itching, chewing paws, etc. because the puppies I feed Pro Plan don't have those problems.
