my mini schnauzers diet

Question
Hi,
I have recently purchased a mini schnauzer. I would like to know the best food to feed him to keep him active and healthy. He is neutuered(just) 17 months old and about 16 lbs. I am afraid of just getting anything off the shelf. We are now feeding him Medi-Cal mixed with IAMS.
Thanks any help would be great.

Answer
Hi Mary-Lou,

My apologies for not replying sooner - somehow this question got lost in my Inbox (I have no idea what happened!) and it was only today when I was notified by AllExperts that I had a late question that I saw this one.  So sorry! Let's see what I can do to help here.

I agree that nutrition plays a key role in longterm health and wellbeing, hence I feel that paying extra money in the short term will pay big dividencds over the long run - I always recommend people use a premium dogfood whenever possible. Science Diet and IAMs are not premium in any sense of the word. I like to be extra careful with your breed due to some of the health conditions they are prone to, so I generally don't recommend a protein- focused food like EVO or CORE. I think one of the Natural Balance Ultra Premium foods, or one of the Fromm FourStar series, would be great for your dog in terms of both ingredient quality and nutrient levels. Have a look:

Just a couple of ideas, are these available in your area? Both are very superior foods to IAMs or Science Diet.
All the best, Catherine
