Question
QUESTION: Holly is 1yr, 4 months old & has hypoglycemia, she will not eat any type of dog food, wet or dry, the only thing i can get her to eat is eggs, cottage cheese, bread, & sliced cheese, what can I do to get her to eat dog food, and what is a good diet for her.

ANSWER: Hi Toby,

These unnaturally small and fragile dogs really require specialized dietary care.  What dog food brands have you tried? Wet/canned and dry? What other foods? The diet you describe is highly unadequate for longterm use. Have you tried her with chicken, lamb, liver, fish...cooked veggies, rice...and, how long has she been eating just the eggs, bread etc?

A good diet (home made) is one that provides all her nutrient requirements - energy, far, protein, vitamins and minerals, plus some fiber - and is palatable enough that she actually eats it. Many premium companies now offer toy dog kibbles, and often canned foods can tempt these fussy little guys to eat.
Fill me in a bit more and I'll see what I can do to help.

QUESTION: Hi Catherine,
We have tried Alpo, Purina, Pedigree, kibbels an bits, mighty dog,Iams, etc.... even bought dog food that you can only get from the vet,, The vet that we were taking her to told us not to feed her human food, but the eggs bread and cheese is the only thing that is keeping her alive. We have bought every kind of canned food, she will not touch it, unless she has a seizure, then she will eat anything in sight, but after that she goes back to not eating it.

Answer
I would be happy to formulate a nutritionally excellent home made diet for her I am sure she would eat, if you are interested please visit my site at www.thepossiblecanine.com and check under Services.

I would also strongly suggest you investigate some premium foods. Here are a few I like much better than any you have listed here:

I prefer to see your dog under professional dietary care, but at the least please, consider one of these foods. There are many other premium brands too, if none of these are available in your area.

Best wishes, Catherine
