Diet for dog with striuvate crystals

Question
I have a 8 1/2 year old neutered male mixed breed (lab/pit/pointer) with striuvate crystals.  The vet gave us Royal Canin Urinary formula. I am looking for a higher quality alternative as I feed high quality food with no by products, artificial ingredients or fillers.  He has no real symptoms, but regular urinalysis' shows crystals.  I have been giving him dried cranberries, which seemed to work for a while, but now he has more crystals.

Answer
Hi Jenny,

I would have your vet run another screen and treat the infection if it has recurred. Meantime, stay on the diet - shortterm it will not harm your dog although it isn't high quality food - and it will help manage  the condition. Once your dog's numbers return to normal, you should be able to retrun to a high quality commercial food with moderate numbers. For now, I would get the struvites cleared up.

I can develop a home made diet for you for struvites, but it is a professional service. If this is of interest, please let me know. Otherwise I'd stay on the presrciption diet for the time being.

All the best, Catherine
