Question
Hi there. I ran across this website while doing a google search to find recipes for my aging (13 yrs old) Chihuahua. She was diagnosed with kidney failure about a month ago. It's in the very early stages though. Her BUN was 56 and after 2 weeks of a Hill's k/d diet the BUN went down to 29. So she has improved greatly. However, I'm not a big fan of Hill's. There's got to be something better. She seems to have started itching and biting all over since the switch to the k/d. I understand her need to be on a special diet. I would really like some recipes to give her variety, keep her kidneys in check, and hopefully help with the skin problems. Thank You, Camille

Answer

Nuvet for home cooking
Hi Camille , yes, that is the problem with the Hill's products - the ingredients cause Other problems such as itching and rashes - Too many junk fillers ... Poor ingredients.
I would love to help you HOME cook for your Chi ..

1.  I will offer you a few easy recipes - they are not as wonderful as Regular dog foods and stews but that sure are better than the Hill's k/d food.!!!
2.  I will need her on 2 supplements : NuVET powder ( just 1/2 teaspoon per day)
   Also, a cranberry supplement-

For Kidney or Liver clients:

Kidney and hepatic recipe for dogs:

The Key is :
***Frequent feedings of high quality simple carbohydrates such as white rice and potatos.
~~~normal amounts of protein should be fed as protein is needed by the liver during repair. Soy protein and milk proteins are helpful..
Hamburger, Drained  ( or another meat is fine)
******~No liver or organ meats...
Boiled eggs without the yokes..
Unprocessed BROWN Rice..  or White rice...
-mixed daily with some cottage cheese or "soy" plain yogurt.
YOU don't have to use soy but it is good ...
Also, make sure you add some x-tra water to each dish - Water will help the kidney to function.
( This recipe is a good start - You can also do ground chicken or lamb rather than the hamburger)
SUPPLEMENT:  ( A MUST at least 1 x per day with HOME COOKING )
Also, 1/2 to 1 full  NuVET wafer per day for your dog
( depends on size of dog)  *****( FOR you just 1/2 teaspoon per day)***********
NuVET vet helps the kidneys and digestion....Also, aides in healing.
Call and ask for the 60 count bottle - or the 90 count bottle:
They do make a 30 count for you - since you have a chi the 30 count will last you 2 months...
Ok, I hope this helps... I know the recipe is boring but it is safe.
YOU can mix and match the meats....Play with it -
YOUR dog will love you for this!!!
TREATS-
Also, you can give some GRAIN FREE treats -
2-3 SoJO GRAIN free treats per day ( they are small )
SoJo makes two grain free treats :
Cranberry tablets /  LOOK in the heath food store for cranberry supplements -
I would give your Chi 1/2 of the dosage per day - I can suggest some but they come in large sizes and your chi is soooooo small.
Take a look around the Health store and see what they have - Sometimes you can find it made for pets but most of the time it is for Humans.
