Diet for a dog that has heart worms and doesnt eat.

Question
My dog got diagnosed with heartworms yesterday after he collapsed when my mom gave him a bath.  yesterday he wouldnt eat at all and today we force fed him about 20 CC of food. which he threw up an hour later. and he just finished throwing up every last bit now, 10 hours after we gave it to him (although there were many minor attempts in feeding like baby food and watering down the dog food).  The only thing he will "eat" is pedialyte which im not even sure i can give him.  He likes to drink water...but he rarely uses the restroom (maybe twice today).  He is extremely thin (you can feel his ribs, spine, and hips) and doesnt have any weight to spare. He is extremely lathargic and anemic.  If he doesnt hold down food he will never be able to get his strength back to take treatments for his heartworms. What should we give him?? He just threw up again...he doesnt stop throwing up. Do you think the pedialyte is making him throw up????? now im scared to even give him anything... its 1:30am.  Any help would be good thanks.

Answer
Evonee, your dog is very ill and requires a consultation ifwe are to  work on a diet. Please see my website at www.thepossiblecanine.com under Services. In the meantime, I would be offering a wide variety of cooked foods, including white rice with chicken, lean beef, eggs, cooked sweet potato and winter squash for potassium, sardines and salmon, a little bit of liver, even babyfood. Offer small quantities frequently and rotate what you offer so he has some variety. But for longterm nutritional support we would need to consult professionally. This is a serious condition and once you are through the treatment, he needs ongoing support for a full recovery.
Very sorry to hear about this and I hope  you were able to get ot a vet and have him seen to.

Let me now if I can help more,
Catherine
