Switching foods

Question
A couple weeks ago I was given a 10-year-old Husky mix by a friend who couldn't care for her anymore. She has been fed Iams all her life, and I want to switch her to Innova, which is what I feed my other dog. She has a very sensitive stomach. I know to change the food gradually, but I'm not sure if it will make her sick after being fed the same brand all her life and because of how old she is and her sensitive stomach. Is it possible to switch her food at this point?

Thank you,
Lucy

Answer
Hi Lucy,

I would totally support your move to a higher qaulity food, there is no reason the Innova should make your new girl sick, especially as youre changing over slowly.
In the event you experience some reaction such as loose stool,  as long as it isn't serious diarrhea, just slow down the transition or perhaps add some canned pumpkin ( a Tbsp per meal will usually suffice for a Husky). If the Innova proves to eb the wrong formula - because a food is premium doesn't mean it's going to suit every individual - you can look for a different formula. The main concerns here are having her adjust to the higher meat content AND to watch for any signs of sensitivity to ingredients. Transitioning can be tricky but it is always a good idea to upgrade.

Hope this helps,  and best wishes with the process! Nice to see someone taking in a senior, too.
