pH problems

Question
Have a 4.5 year old Shih Tzu with constant urinary problems. Was recently on Uroeze (800 Milligrams a day), thyroid pills and hydrochlorizine to for her to pee more often. She gets regular bladder infections and recently had surgery to remove bladder stones. I was tired of giving her pills so decided to switch her to a homemade diet. She's been on the homemade diet for a month now (chicken breast (white and dark meat#, sweet potatoes, broccoli, carrots, zucchini, garlic #1 clove for a large meatloaf (13x9# pan), pasta and millet #to replace rice). We just retested her urine and her pH is still at 8.0. She did not have any crystals and was flushing her urine enough, but can't seem to get her pH down. Are there any supplements I can give her to help with this or is there a specific food that causing her high pH? She has many allergies so I have to be careful what foods I feed her. What kind of foods should I avoid feeding a dog with pH issues?

Answer
Hi,
I certainly hope that you got my email telling you that I was moving and that I had real problems getting on line. IF not, I deeply apologize for seeming to ignore you.

I would like to see you get to a Vitamin Shoppe or Mrs Green's and pick up DDS Plus FOR YOUR little one. It's the finest probiotic on the market and over time will really build her immune system which she sorely needs after all the meds. STay away from grains and glutens please. Also,
please add more veggies AND FRUITS to her diet (alkaline) and cut back on the chicken and proteins--don't cut out but cut down as meats and proteins are very acidic.

My dogs do not have ph balace problem that I am aware of but I feed them this way anyway. I use DDS Plus (20 minutes before a meal to get it into the system on an empty tummy), a dig enzyme, yams, zucchini, cukes, apples, banana, pears (everything pulverized and skinned). I Lightly steam their chicken and rabbit (rabbit is the easiest to digest if you csn find it)and to it I add a little yam daily--I vary the other veggie I use. I feed NO RICE OR GRAINS OR GARLIC. pLEASE BE careful of your garlic usage. It is good for a temporary antibiotic but really should not be used over extended periods of time.

Just remember that chicken is acidic and never use greasy dark meat. Even if you remove the skin chicken is still greasy and acidic so if you are going to use it, stream it please and cut back on the amts you are giving.

I hope this helped and again, I apologize for my seeming indiffence. I have been BURIED trying to move. Let me hear from you, Please. Susan
