pH strip tests

Question
I have read multiple responses you've posted regarding struvite crystals, and you have suggested testing the urine with a pH strip. Our Pembroke has been on a struvite crystal IVD Control diet and Royal Canin has decided to discontinue this product. So, we are searching for new, holistic dog foods and would love to do the pH strip, but what is the range I am looking for, and whats the warning point?

Having worked in a pet store that carries premium foods, I have many at my access, and know to aim for higher protein, lower carb, lower magnesium, but not even my vet had mentioned pH checking at home-would love to know the target here. Or are you referring to litmus strips? In which case, are we aiming for really basic or more acidic?

Thank you so much!

Answer
Hello Catherine,

In a dog who has had struvites, if the antibiotics have cleared up the infection and the crystals have not returned, I use pretty normal numbers, actually; in a home made diet I might restrict phosphorus, but magnesium I keep at a requirement level.   As for the"higher protein/lower carb" idea,  yes, but don't go overboard and over-acidify, either; usually 30% (dry matter) is good. . Personally I prefer a home made diet for these dogs, but if you are looking for a food, I'd aim for moderate numbers; say around 30% protein on a dry matter basis.. and aim for 6.0 to 6.5 ph.
Don't overacidify or your stone forming dog may develop another type of crystal, that develops in  in acidic urine. 7 is considered neutral but with struvite it's good to go a little on the acidic side, just not too far.
Hope this helps, please feel free to ask for clarification if need be.
And good luck with this, Catherine
