What to feed my 1 year old Mastiff

Question
Dear Traci,
I just adopted a 13 month old pure bred English Mastiff. She's really beautiful and weighs about 130 pounds. She had been eating Pedigree which I know is HORRIBLE for her to eat. I bought a bag of it to wean her off of it onto new food. The problem is I don't know what food to change to. I am a college student so it would be nice if I could find a good quality food for her that isn't as expensive as many of the others. I had been looking at Taste of the Wild. I was also wondering how much I should feed her and how long I should wean her off the Pedigree? Thank you so much for everything!

Sincerely,
Lauren

Answer
Lauren,

I would look at a large breed puppy food until she is two since Mastiff's mature so slowly, you want to avoid orthopedic problems. Fromm makes a Large Breed Puppy formula and they offer them at a great price if you know what to ask for. Find a retailer in your area that sells Fromm and ask them for a "Breeder Bag." Same formula as the retail bag but the breeder bag isn't all pretty and high gloss so you get a 40lb bag for almost the same price as the retail 33lb. Now that's a bargain :) It is a good brand, by a small company, and I know Mastiff owners and breeders that use it so it seems like a good fit here. Congrats on the new girl and kudos to you for not wanting to feed Pedigree!

Best,
