Chihuahua with a liver shunt

Question
My 6 month old Chihuahua Fletcher, has a liver shunt and is on Hill's Prescription Diet L/D. My vet said to feed him 1/4 can twice a day. I think Fletcher is getting sick of the same food day in and day out. Is there anything special I can give him? Fruits? Vegetables? Crunchy kibble? Any recipes using his canned food? I appreciate you taking time to help me.

Answer
hi Colleen,

With liver shunt you really need to stay on a careful diet. I would be happy to hep you develop recipes suited to his special needs, if you want to contact me we can discuss this in much more detail. I'm uncomfortable making dietary suggestions for a dog with a serious condition unless I know a good deal more about it. For example, has the dog stabilized now, what medication is he on,  and so on. It's a challenge to meet a pup's special needs for growth while maintaining the lower protein diet usually indicated with this condition. Here is some more information:

I wish there was a simple recipe I could suggest, but I work with the individual dog, and I'm unimpressed with the diets I see circulating on the internet, ingredient wise.

Best wishes, Catherine
