Food for pug with allergies

Question

Miah
We have an almost 8 year old pug that has suffered from food and environmental allergies all of her life.  We have been feeding her Dr. Harvey's for the last few years and she seems tired of eating it.  She used to eat it up in what seemed like seconds and now she seems to eat just because but doesn't seem to enjoy it.  I was worried about her last week because she wasn't interested in her food so I made her some chicken and rice which we mixed half and half with her regular food and she ate it right up.  We would like to switch her to a dry food but we are unsure what we should try.  She seems to be sensitive to beef so we stay away from that in her food and treats.  She is allergic to 4 different types of grass and 1 type of weed.  Any help you can suggest would be great.

Thanks

Carrie

Answer
Hi Carrie,

My first reply is a question; would you be willing to prepare her food yourself? I see the best results with allergic dogs on home prepaped (raw or cooked) diets, to be honest.

If this is not a possibility, I'd recommend looking into a limited ingredient food. A few examples would include:

All good quality foods with limited ingredients and/or novel proteins. I'd look for a duck, turkey or venison based food, if at all possible, and grainfree might be helpful, but only if your Pug has an allergy to grain.

Are any of these foods available for you locally? Is home prepared diet an option?

All the best, Catherine
