Puppy doesnt eat

Question
Sasha, my 3.5 month old female Golden Retriever Puppy has very little appetite. She eats only (sometimes less) than a handful of food - rice/chicken in a meal. She absolutely doesn't eat any type of dog food. Although, lately she has started drinking a little more milk (ie: 400ml per day), she's very thin and growing very slowly. How can I improve her appetite/growth?

Answer
What does the vet say?  Cut out the milk.  Dogs can't digest the lactose in it and it may be keeping her digestion upset.  It is essential to be eating a complete and balanced diet in a puppy's early months.  It is almost impossible to assure that unless you are feeding a commercial dog chow.  As long as the vet can't find anything wrong except the results of the poor diet, you need to get her on a good chow.

The worst thing you can do is to bribe a dog with rich foods into eating more than it needs. Instead, Put down the dish with what the dog should eat, and give it 15 minutes to eat. Then take it up. Do not give it anything to eat until its next scheduled meal. In a few days, it should be eating what it needs. Continue to check its ribs and adjust the food as needed. This is not easy. I had a Shepherd go 3 days on a few nibbles. I was a wreck, but she was fine. It is almost unknown for a healthy dog not to eat what it needs. Unfortunately, in too many cases, it is less than the package says, and less than the owner thinks the dog should have. Many dogs are quite good at holding out for tastier chow. Like kids, sometimes it calls for tough love.
