Question
QUESTION: i have a 14 week old labrador. when i first got her from the breeder she was on a complete dry food,i decided to change her food to a better quality one. i slowly introdused this dry food bit by bit but she suddenly started to have diarrhea even though the food states that it is used for dogs with digestion problems.vet says she is healthy and it must by something in the food that does not agree with her. The food i give her does not contain wheat or dairy products, only brown rice so i am at a loss to what can be causing her problem

ANSWER: I frequently see questions here like yours, from people feeding ''high quality'' chows.  I seldom see ones from people feeding common ones, perhaps what the breeder was feeding.  I have seen thousands of young Labs doing fine on Pro Plan chicken and rice.  I know of, but am less familiar, with even more doing just fine on Iams which contains many of the same ''bad'' ingredients as Pro Plan.  Duh, dogs on common chows do well, dogs on chows with ''better'' ingredients often have trouble.  Could it be that dogs actually don't do as well on quality chows?  Do you have any controlled tests showing dogs do better on what you are feeding than what the breeder was feeding?  I would go back to it.

QUESTION: Many thanks. but the food she was getting from her breeder still made her bowels quite loose but not as much as the one i have given her. Is there anything in dog foods that should be avoided to combat any possible food intolerance

Answer
Most dogs will do fine on most dog chows.  Much of the loose bowel problems with puppies is not due to the chow they are being given.  A healthy, well bred puppy should be able to eat almost any chow without problems.  Many that say otherwise are selling special diets.  One of the biggest causes is various parasites.  I never appreciated how good the vet I have gone to for years was until my friend fought loose bowels for months until her vet finally discovered the puppy had Coccidiosis.  I have had several puppies that had it, and my vet found it the first visit, prescribed medicine that quickly cleared it up.  Beat on your vet for answers.
