Question
QUESTION: hi marie, my name is eleanor and i have a 1 1/2 year old yorkie. he is 5 1/2 lbs.  i just recently noticed that when he was going outside to pee, he would make a puddle and then walk around and go again, but nothing would come out. then one night he started peeing all over the house and was shaking and i thought he felt warm, the next day i took him to the vet ( with a urine sample that i got from him)  she said the urine has a slight trace of blood in it and no crystals , so they put him on clovamox for 10 days. he felt better but still strained a few times a day. the i took him back to the vet with another urine sample and that revealed no blood , but some crystals and they gave him zeniquin 25 mg and i gave him 1/2 a pill and he got really sick, very very tired and limp and i was worried. next morning i call the vet and tell him i cant give him that pill. so then i go in and they do a sonogram, which reveals no stones, no blockage, everything looks fine, but he decides that he should take a sterile urine from him to see if there is bacteria and what type of crystals they are. so that test is performed, comes back as no bacteria but A FEW struvite crystals. then he puts him on royal canin SO urinary canned food. i do not like the idea that the food has by products in it so i am looking to see if there is another food, better quality to feed him. both my yorkies have been fed THE HONEST KITCHEN DEHYDRATED dog food mixed with RAW FOOD. how long can he stay on that royal canin SO? is there something else? do you think i can get rid of the crystals? i just spent $1,000.00 on him with all these tests. thank you for any help or advice you can share with me.
eleanor

ANSWER: Hi Eleanor, Well, I am glad that the Vet did give him a good exam and tests.  Sorry about the costs at the VET, yes very high.... Here is a diet you can cook for this baby long term.
You can feed raw if you wish, just don't use the Honest Kitchen on the Sturvite doggie.
If we can keep the inflammation down with supplements, your baby should be fine.
Good quality recipes and a few supplements will do the trick:

QUESTION: hi marie, thanks for getting back to me. the recipes sound good, as i have home cooked for my older yorkie whan the recalls were making the dogs sick and dying.
i know you mentioned lifes abundance for treats, but is there a canned dog food or dry food that has the similar analysis that royal canin so has? i looked at lifes abundance canned and it has 9% protein compared to royal canin so at 4.5%.
my vet and every other vet i have been too DO NOT APPROVE of raw. they said he can get e-coli and bacteria from eating raw food meat.
i just am so confused and dont know what to do.

Answer
Hi Again, Only the Hill's RX dog food  and the Purina are something like Royal Canin.
The products are low in protein and have POOR ingredients listed. Many dogs do not want to eat the special foods at all.  Your best bet would be to try home cooking again.  You can cook the meats.  I always tell folks to lightly cook all the meats.  I am not a Raw fan.

Give the recipes a try.

BEST wishes,
