Question
QUESTION: 2 year old malamute/husky mix we have had for two weeks that we rescued from a shelter.  Three hours after eating, he starts projectile style spitting up liquid for several hours, every time he gets up after lying down for a while.  Also has diarehea.  We are feeding him EVO red meat large breed.  He does not chew his food, swallows it all whole in about 10 seconds.  Pectillin and probiotics not helping.  He has been wormed.

ANSWER: Slowing down his eating should help.  There are not one, but 2 easy, tested, effective ways to control rapid eating. You can spread the food out on a cookie sheet or something. Some of my friends just throw it on the floor of the crate. You can put large rocks in the food dish, much to big to swallow. Either way, the dog can't gulp down one big mouthful after another.

QUESTION: I have tried feeding one kibble at a time.  He still starts spitting up 2-3 hours later.

ANSWER: Not an easy question after all.

How much of his history is available?  Can you even find out what the shelter was feeding an dhow he did?  You can't count on dogs doing best on premium foods such as EVO.  It is possible he was doing fine on something else.

It is also possible he was dumped at the shelter because of the problem.

Have you discussed the problem with your vet?  I can't think of a physical problem that would lead to it, but vets have far more training than I do.

Kibble is economical, and it is good for a dog to chew it.  Since he is getting none of the benefits of chewing, you could try soaking it in water or feeding canned.

QUESTION: Prior owner was feeding Ol'Roy from Walmart, she said he ate 40 lbs a week.  He is very thin now and very hungry all the time.  I tried cooking him boiled chicken and rice, and he threw that up in its entirety about 15 minutes after eating.  The vet wormed him thinking he might have whip worms, but that did nothing.  The vet prescribed centraline for the diarrhea, and three days of Pectillin but that does not stop the spitting up.  I have Orijen dog food on order, as the kennel said it has herbs that help their stomach.

Answer
Usually the chicken and rice works fairly well.  For now, why don't you try some Old Roy.  Perhaps even wet it down.  I don't have information on how well Old Roy, and I doubt those bashing it do either.  if you look at the ingredients, it may be similar to the regular Purina.  I know that dogs do perfectly well on the Purina.  There is no evidence the premium foods are any better for dogs than it.  Keep working with the vet.
