Senior Dogfood vs. Adult Maintenance

Question
I recently started feeding my 10 yr. old toy poodle Wellness. To date, I feel it is by far the BEST food on the market. Her coat has improved dramatically and her face is no longer stained by tears. My question is -- is it really necessary to give the "senior formula" or may I use the regular maintenance adult formula? Is there a difference between these two formulas?

I also give her half a can of Sr. Mighty Dog (she weighs 4.6#). I do this because she LOVES it and I just feel its cruel to only give dry food to any dog.

Thank you for your help!

Answer
Hi Debbie,

Personally I do not support the Wellness Senior food at all. If the regular maintenance is working, no reason not to stick with it. Current research supports increased, not lowered protein for healthy seniors. You can also add whole foods such as cooked chopped egg, sardines and salmon, diced turkey or chicken, a little beef heart and liver, lamb or venison - plus small amounts of tripe, plain yogurt and well cooked brown rice or sweet potato.

If the canned food makes up a significant amount of the faily energy total, I'd use Merrick's, Spot's Stew, Innova or Evangers, as well.
All the best, Catherine
