Question
My 10 1/2 year old Mini Schnauzer has been vomiting once a week to 10 days for the last 2-2 1/2 months.Doesn't act sick before or after. Have not changed any food or feeding times. Have talked to her Dr. & he said "a virus is going around". That was 3 weeks ago. Could this be something serious?

Answer
Hello,
Forgive the delay in my response. I am moving and am swamped. I have barely turned the computer on in weeks.

Vomiting is very common in dogs but if it's a regular thing (and it seems that way even though it is not a daily occurence)but I am not sure I like the explanation you were given by your vet. It's too generic. I would get another opinion for sure.

What times of day do you feed your Schnauzer? Has anything changed, anything at all, in the past 2 1/2 months? Is it projectile vomiting or does he just start to retch? What time of day do you feed? Ok you said you haven't changed feeding times. Maybe you want to try doing that. Does he vomit in the morning or night? I would not dismiss this even though he is acting fine. I am not suggesting it is something serious but that explanation from the vet would not satisfy me either.

He could be developing a bit of gastritis, or IBD--these were my first thoughts but you say it is every 10 days or so...very strange. I don't want to start tossing out diagnostic suggestions here cause Im not a vet. But please keep track (as you are) and get another opinion. He's not a young dog and you don't want things to go on too long even if "something is going around".

I know this response is a bit inadequate but I am bit perplexed too..particularly since it's about every 10 days. There is a trigger and finding it is the key.
