Question
I have a one 1/2 yr old female pug (not fixed). she has been vet checked and has no health issues.  She has always had a problem with putting on weight she only weighs 12 lbs.  The vet has told me that I need to feed her more.  so we did increase her food to twice a day but she barely eats the morning helping and only if it is hand fed to her.  she did have a problem with dry skin so we changed her food from dog chow to science diet for dogs with sensitive skin skin problem gone but the weight problem still exists.  whatelse can i do for her to help her gain weight.  thank you for any help.

Answer
This is one of the few cases where I would suggest switching to a premium food.  Some of them are more calorie dense than the Science Diet.  You might try Iams first.  It has much the same formulation as the Science, but I have heard many reports of dogs gaining weight on it.

I hate www.dogfoodanalysis.com because of all the unscientific hype and appeal to emotions.  Ignore their ratings and lists of ingredients.  In no way are the ratings based on anything but speculation.  It does have calorie and fat content of many brands.  I think you want a food high in calories and fat for your dog to gain weight and have a healthy skin.  Pick through looking at the data and forget their subjective opinions.
