Question
QUESTION: I have an 8yr old yorkie with recent elevated liver enzymes. Is currently taking SAMe for thirty days and then will recheck. Vet has ordered Hill's prescription l/d for him. I have been making his food for about 6wks now, but am concerned he's not getting enough nutrients. Do you have any recipes for him? He also takes Cosequin for joints and fish oil. Thanks so much for any thing you can help me with.

ANSWER: Hi Patricia - I am so glad you want to cook for your little yorkie rather than use the Hill's products!  Good for you.
I would send the I/D diet back - you don't want to use that if you can cook..
Ok - here is a recipe to try - also, please e-mail me your current recipe so I can look at it:
The Key is :
Frequent feedings of high quality simple carbohydrates such as white rice and potatos.
~~~normal amounts of protein should be fed as protein is needed by the liver during repair. Soy protein and milk proteins are helpful..
Hamburger, Drained  ( or another meat is fine)
~No liver or organ meats...
Boiled eggs without the yokes..
Unprocessed BROWN Rice..  or White rice...
mixed daily with some cottage cheese or "soy" plain yogurt.
YOU don't have to use soy but it is good ...
SUPPLEMENT:
Also, 1/2 a NuVET wafer per day for your yorkie..
Call and ask for the 60 count bottle - it will last you 4 months and give you the Balance you need in Home cooking...
BESIDES the NuVET ----
SUPPLEMENTS -
Yes - SAMe is great ....
Milk thistle is a must:
Not taking Milk Thistle?
Milk thistle is the most well known herb recommended for treating liver disease. Its silymarin content has been shown effective in treating liver disease.
Here is a Liver Cleanse Formual - Just 1 per day ( small dog dosage)
a larger dog could have 3 -4 per day / depends on weight.
QUESTION: Thanks so much for the quick response. Here's what I've been using: boiled turkey / chicken(deboned)brown rice, no yolk noodles, some wheat germ, and occasionally organic spinach. All are ground in food processor. I'm concerned I'm mixing too many carbs. Would like to add more veggies/organic baby food (use nothing with onion or onion powder)Have made doggie treats with wheat germ and chicken flavored baby food. He loves that! Thanks again. Will order the NuVet wafers.
Ok - your recipe is not bad at all - You were missing a good natural supplement like the NuVET - here are a few changes I would make:
Yes, Good-- boiled turkey / chicken(deboned)/ red meat 1-2 x per week is fine, too.
YES, Good --brown rice,
~~~( JUST once per week on this )  no yolk noodles,

Yes, Good-- some wheat germ,
Yes, Good--  occasionally organic spinach - you can do a white potato 1-2 x per week...
All are ground in food processor.

YOU don't need to add more veggies - Not too good for him.
HOW about adding cottage cheese or some yogurt to all his meals, if he will eat it????

yes, order the NuVET here / they have a powder or wafer - He may just want the 1/2 teaspoon of powder mixed into his food?

Continue with the Fish oil and the joint supplement, too.
Let your vet know that you have someone helping you to balance out the food.

Good Luck and keep me posted!
