Question
I have 2 chiuhawhas 5/6 years olds. My problem is the female is realy overwieght to where you cant feel her ribs and sometimes i'll notice her stomach is blotted to where it looks like she's pregnate.  I worry that she will die early because she or ready had 4 or more seazures this year. We feed her Purina One about 1 cups  since my famly memmber buys the the food he buys the large breed puppy  for his puppy. I'm preety shure thats too much. Is there a way I can get her back in health and down size her food or make a homemade diet.

Thank you

Answer
You are correct, it is very important to control her weight.  All you really need to do is feed her a little less.  Try cutting back to 3/4 cups and weigh her frequently.  If she isn't losing weight slowly, adjust how much again.  You want a slow, but steady weight loss.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  when she reaches the ideal body condition, increase it just enough to maintain that weight.

I would like to see her on an adult chow, or a weight loss formula, but the large breed puppy chow isn't too much different from an adult chow.
