Six Months Puppy Diet.

Question
Hi, I have a puppy 6+ months old(D.O.B: June/7/2008) male Rottweiler puppy.

I have been feeding him Royal Canin Starter from day 1 when I got him from a month or so as he was not eating anything. He was a month old back then. I stopped Commecial Kebbel Brands and started giving home cooked meals for 3 months. But he fall victim of Red Mange so I have decided to switch back to commercial dog foods again.

I am currently residing in India, we don't have 6 Star foods like Innova Evo or Wellness Core... The best we can afford is Natures Varity Instinct, Royal Canin and Pedigree Professional Range. I have currently shifted from Royal Canin "Maxi Junior" to "Puppy Giant"... But he is not interested in having his own meal. He would only eat home cooked meat and rice but not the dog food. Why??? He would even stay hungry for a day but not eat dog food... Can I do something?

Answer
Hi Chris.

It is possible that something in the food you are offering is not agreeing with him.  At the same time, home cooked is far more appetizing than dry kibble, wouldn't you say?

Offering a home prepared diet is a fine thing to do, you'll just want to make sure it's balanced for your pup's needs.

Nature's Variety is a nice food to feed, however, the Instinct line is high in calcium for a growing large breed.  If you can get the Prairie line, that would be more appropriate.

I would choose the Royal Canin over the Pedigree, but would choose Nature's Variety over both.  If you can find canned food as well as dry, try mixing canned in with the dry.  This is often more enticing.

Good luck.
