Fibre in Dogs Diet

Question
I have a 4 yr old Golden Retriever who constantly has loose stools and is thin, he is prone to colitis. A year ago my vet put him on a high fiber prescription food made by Purina called DCO. Since being on this food things have really improved, however I can no longer get this food, we live in Barbados and there is none on the Island.Robbie has now been off it for just 5 days and I am already seeing the return of the loose stool and a reluctance to eat. What can I add to his food to increase the fiber, at the moment he eats Chow and cooked beef and liver plus some pumpkin cooked in with the meatPlease help if you can.

Answer
Hi Lynda,

I was going to say add pumpkin, but I see that you do that already.
Many dogs like carrot sticks, peas or green beans which are high in fiber.  Add brown rice which has three times the fiber of white rice. Add a sprinkle of bran to the dog food. Rice bran, wheat bran and oat bran are all high in fiber. The bran is the outer layer of grain and is often removed when grain is processed so that part of the nutritional value is lost. A small amount of bran is best. Soak it in a bit of water to improve the digestibility. And you can also give some apple bits to your dog for added fiber. Also adding a supplement is great too.  You can had NuVet Labs send you a 90 day supple of the supplement I use.  Call 1-800-474-7044 and use my order code 42299

Hope this helps.
