Natural Alternatives to Hills C/D

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
One year ago my dog (17 lb Beagle/Pointer Mix, now about 3 years old, a rescue) was diagnosed with having a high (but not alarming) crystal count in her urine and put on a special diet. The vet did not treat her for UTI or anything else, just the diet change. 6 months later she was normal.

The problem is that I cannot tolerate feeding Hills (or any other brand that uses by-products and inferior ingredients) to my pets and am trying to find a NON-PRESCRIPTION alternative food for her without having to go the route of fixing it myself.

I know I can upgrade to Royal Canin Urinary SO which is a little bit healthier, but would really appreciate if you could recommend something non-prescription.

Thank you!

ANSWER: YAY I consider every person who switches from that poison a personal victory LOL.
I like FLint River Lamb and Rice Premium wellness. good ingredients, decent purine level, I like Flint River Fish and chips wellness premium even better. Either of those are great. Check into some Natural Balance as well and see if you might like one of their formulas. Good luck!

QUESTION: Hi Cindi,
Thanks for the quick response. Just for clarification, are you recommending these brands (Flint River & Natural Balance) because they would be an appropriate substitute for Hills C/D and/or Royal Canin Urinary SO? Or just because you think they are good? What I really need is a recommendation for a substitute food for this particular dog with special diet needs; my other dog & cats already eat Natural Balance.
Thank you!!

Answer
I am reccomending them because of their ingredients and the purine levels of the foods I mentioned.  That's what you need to watch in a dog food for a dog who has UTI problems. In doing research those are the dog foods I would feed my dog if it had the same problems as yours.
I hope your baby does well,
Cindi
