Question
I have a 3 month old lab puppy and a 2 month old brittany/english cocker spaniel mix. I want to switch to good puppy food that will be right for the both of them. I think I have decided on "Blue" but would like some advice. Thank you.

Answer
I have zero confidence in Blue Buffalo and other premium foods.  I see many people trying it and other similar foods and going through a half dozen before finding one their dog does OK on.  I wouldn't be surprised if many of the people that claim their dog did better on a certain brand than another are part time reps for it.  I know some of the others here sell dog food.  Much of what you read about dog food is marketing hype.  There are those that devoutly believe if it is more expensive, it must be better.  Yes, I love a steak dinner, but often end up eating a chicken casserole.  Good nutrition doesn't require expensive ingredients.  If they are doing well on something else, I would stick to it.  If they are on different foods, try switching the one to the other's food.  I can't understand the people that change food and when the dog does poorly on the new one, don't go back to the old.  How much you feed may be more important than what you feed and many puppy chows are formulated for more rapid growth than is best for large breeds.

You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
