Question
Are grains in dog food good or bad and why?  And what is a good source of carbohydrate?  My dogs are on Fromm sweet potato and duck.  Is that good food?

Answer
I think much of the bashing of grains in dog foods comes from those selling grain free foods.  The only real rational reason for avoiding grains is that a few dogs have trouble with them.  Likely some dogs don't do well with other sources of carbohydrates.  I have read that potatoes are bad because they are so highly digestible that they cause a blood sugar spike just like sugar itself.  The more complex carbohydrates in grains may be much better for most dogs.  All the talk about grains being fillers and so forth just aren't true.  Check http://www.ddgs.umn.edu/articles-companion/2004-Hill-%20Alternative%20proteins%2...

No, dogs don't need corn or other grains.  I don't need the ground turkey I buy at Aldi's either.  I could eat steak.  Both can be part of the complete and balanced diet people and dogs need.

When I challenge those against grains to provide proof, most of the answers only prove how faulty their reasoning is.
