Answer
One of the most common reasons for a dog not to eat is being over fed.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  One of the worst things you can do is bribe a dog into eating more than it needs with rich food.  Certainly don't add salt to its diet.  It is very harmful to dogs.

If available where you are, the safest diet for him would be one of the common brands of commercial dog chow such as Pro Plan, Iams, Pedigree, Science diet, Eukanuba, etc.  Modern dog chows are carefully formulated to meet the well known dietary requirements of dogs.  It is very difficult for the average dog owner to match the quality of commercial dog chows.  There are irrational people that try, but many of their dogs seem to do well for a time, and then suddenly die of pancreatits.  Many of those suggesting such diets actually are selling recipes or ingredients for such diets.  They want peoples money and don't care about their dogs' health.  The hypocrites are doing just what they accuse the dog food companies of doing.

If you want the opinion of somebody you can trust on this, see http://www.avma.org/onlnews/javma/jan05/050115ww.asp  At the end, they give a source of recipes for your own dog diet.  If I had to feed my own dogs such a diet, I would trust the AVMA more than any other website.  They have other dog care material on their site, and unlike much of the net, you can trust it.  Anybody can put up a website and fill it with whatever nonsense they want.
