QUESTION: Hi Cindi. My father just gave me two cases of canned dog food he has specially ordered from his vet for his older dog that had heart disease. The dog didn't like either of the foods, and the poor guy has recently passed. My question for you.. Is this special diet food good to give to my healthy dogs aged 3 and 4. There are 3 different kinds: Science diet prescription diet a/d. Royal Canine Modified Formula (yellow) and the last is either pedigree cardiovascular or Purina cardiovascular. It seems like there is less protein in the royal canine than in normal canned dog food. My dogs mainly eat Natural Balance dry dog food, but I add a spoonful of the wet, to get them to eat. I just want to make sure this food is not waisted. Of course, if it's not good for them, I will give it to a local rescue. Thanks in advance for your time.

ANSWER: I don't like Science Diet for many reasons. Personally I would donate it to a local rescue or humane society that might need it for special needs dogs. If you really want to feed it a little bit won't hurt them. the Royal Canine, I wouldn't hesitate to feed. I wouldn't feed Purina or Pedigree to anything other than an absolutely starving animal for a VERY short term. And then only if I had nothing else :) I'd donate that too.

QUESTION: Why the dislike of Science Diet. I don't feed my dog's this, but you sound pretty sure it's not so good. What do you think about Nature's Balance or Blue?

The primary ingredient in most Science Diet products is corn. Though chicken might be the first ingredient, as with Science Diet adult, there will be corn in several other forms, which when put together outweigh the chicken. Science Diet is full of fillers, corn, wheat, soy, by products. Fillers are non digestible poor sources of nutrition that your dog just poops out at best. They are also full of known allergens which are also corn. wheat and soy. It's just basically crap with a little food mixed in LOL. Sorry but it's true. Is it Nature's Balance? Or Natural Balance? I like Blue it's one of my top ten dog foods. Natural Balance (Dick Van Patten's food) is a good dog food but I can't find anythong on Nature's Balance.
