Question
QUESTION: My English Mastiff Male recently went through surgery removing hundreds of these stones, and I am looking for the right food for him to hopefully eliminate this from re occuring. He is a show dog, and is in tact and I hope to find out this is not herridetary so I may continue to show him. I will do whatever it takes to keep my Boy healthy but prefer a natural dog food I can purchas. Can you suggest something as I do not think a Vet. has the most knowledge on dogs nutrition.

ANSWER: Hello Penny,
So sorry to hear your boy went through this, but the good news is there is much you can do to help prevent reccurrence. I strongly suggest a home made diet, if that's a possibility for you.  Nutritional management of  uroliths is difficult for the layperson to formulate, although I can give you some pointers if you decide this is how you want to go. Alternately you can contact me about having a diet plan developed for your dog. I suggest using a professional here if at all possible.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend a commercial product that works well for oxalates and also contains high quality ingredients.  The average doglover is placed in the position of choosing either a product such as Hill's, which has been properly formulated to help control the condition but contains rather appalling ingredients, or else use a higher quality premium food that may contribute to recurrence. The solution is to use a home made diet that reproduces the nutrient composition of the Hill's product but utilizes high quality fresh foods. If this is of interest to you,we can discuss it in more detail. Let me know soon if you can, as I will be taking some time off over the holidays.

All the best, Catherine

QUESTION: Catherine,
I am anxious to hear your plan, as each day I am sure these stones are building more and more. I would love to hear the Diet you recommend.
         Thank You,
         Penny

ANSWER: Hi Penny,

If you have had a chance to look over my Services page, you can select which one will work best - probably the 101 Plan (with four weeks follow up). The next step is to contact me at catlane@thepossiblecanine.com, and I will send you the paperwork to get started - a questionnaire that helps me formulate your dog's meals, and our contract agreement. I can book you to start next week if you really wish to get going.

Looking forward to working with you, Catherine
