Miniature Schnauzer - Diet for Fatty Lipomas

Question
Good afternoon!  I have a spayed almost 9 year old female Schnauz who is getting very large fatty lipomas that the vet feels are benign.  All of my dogs have been on Purina Special Blend Oatmeal and Chicken for years.  I understand that Schnauzers are prone to these fatty lipomas.  I was at Petsmart Saturday and was approached by a rep for Buffalo Blue and bought the Senior food for her.  Do you feel this is a good choice and might help to prevent further growth and additional fatty lipomas?  Should I switch to the little bites instead?

Answer
Hello Michelle,
I am NOT a proponent of any commercial dog food but sometimes we ALL fall into this scenario. I cook for my dogs and take as organic a route as I can..I'm not a purist and do use a little kibble (that I actually sell on line from a good company) because when I am traveling I simply CANNOT prepare the pure foods I like to feed them. This is my choice and believe me, using the Life Abundance has come in so handy when traveling or when I need someone else to feed my dogs. So, having said all of the above--LOL--I honestly do not think that you can prevent these lipomas from growing. All of my yorkies as they aged had these benign fatty deposits on their skin and they upset me terribly. My vet, actually three of them, assured me that this was quite "normal" for these dogs. Normal or not, I always hated feeliing these things on my dog's body. But, as I said above I doubt seriously that a diet change will prevent them from growing. This is an educated guess, NOT AN EXPERT OPINION--based on my experience with all of my older Yorkies.

If you really want to switch to TRY and prevent these things from happening, then how about home cooking with supplements? This is what I do. It cannot hurt your current situation at all although I doubt it will be a cure or even a real preventive. It would just be feeding your pooch in a much healthier way.  I lightly steam organic chicken, juice organic squash or cukes and cook yams for them. I use a very good probiotic (not sold over the counter but from a Company out West) and digestive enzyme along with something called APA blend which contains all of their vitamins These supplements are loaded with plant enzymes and blue green algae and my dogs are thriving. I have three now.

For years now, I have consulted with a woman that I credit with saving my one YOrkie's digestive life. She does not charge and is totally awesome when it comes to diet and supplements. She IS A CEO OF THE SUPPLEMENT COMPANY I MENTIONED ABOVE so don't be put off when she suggests buying the very supplements I use. These supplements are the best around--not sold commercially and top of the line. She will willingly and caringly map out a diet for you to feed your pooch because she adores dogs. Both of her dogs lived to be 19y.o. and neither one ever had a vaccine given. (another topic, don't get me starrted LOL). I KNOW you would love her dietary advice and I hope you will contact her--if only to get information. Explain to her what you explained to me and I GUARANTEE she will have even better suggestions than I have made here. OK? Here is her email and do not hesitiate to write her. Tell her that I, Sue Behlmar with Dixie, Henry and Buddy, sent you, This way she will know that you didn't appear out of the blue.
