Question
Hello,
I have a couple questions. I have a 4 month old Female Dacshund puppy, a 14 yr old male Dashador(Dacshund/Labrador) mix. & I have a 6 week old Male Dacshund puppy also...WOW that's alot(lol). Anyways, I'm been wondering the female & male puppy play around alot and growl at each other while they play fight. I realize that dogs don't have hand to play around with each other with, but is that normal or does that mean that they are not getting along. Also, the Male puppy keeps trying to suck the females nipple as if she were the real mom, and I've been feeding him 3 times a day and he still does that. I'm I feeding him to little or to much??? The female only eats once and she seems to be hungry alot too? PLEASE LET ME KNOW......

Answer
Sorting out play and fighting is tough.  Low, rumbly growls, quick snaps, and one running off and not coming back for more are bad signs.  Usually they do fine.

Larger dogs need 3 meals a day to 3 months.  Smaller ones may need the third meal longer and maybe 2 meals all their life.  Many dogs are always hungry even if over fed.  The only way to determine how much is by their ribs.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
