Fussy eater

Question
Hello,
I have a 3.5 year old male labrador. It weighs in at 90 pounds. It has very low energy levels and even a round of walk tires it out completely. It is an extremely fussy eater and likes nothing but eggs. Currently, we feed it 3 eggs with rice, once a day. I am wondering whether it receives proper nutrition from this. I have tried various brands of dog food but it never even touches it even when left hungry for 3 days. It also never drinks milk. And since we are vegetarians ( we eat only eggs),we don't and don't want to give it meat. I also give it calcium tablets specifically made for dogs to meet calcium requirements as it doesn't drink milk. Please offer me a solution to reduce its weight and increase its overall health. Also, i would be very grateful to you if you could suggest me a diet plan for it. Thank you.

Answer
Very few Labs should weigh 90 pounds.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx

If your dog is over weight, for now I would continue the eggs and rice, but enough less of it to bring him down to his ideal body condition.  Cut back a little and if you see no results, cut back some more.  You want a loss of weight that you can see, but not too fast.  a kg a week would be fine.  While canine nutrition is well known, it is quite complex.  Likely the eggs and rice are not a complete and balanced diet.  dogs have trouble digesting milk, so don't give it to him.

The best thing would be to get him on a kibble.  Once you get some weight off him, it maybe easier to get him to eat kibble.  Most kibbles contain at least some meat, some more than others.  The regular Purina is low in meat.  Their Beneful Healthy Harvest is even lower.  Finding reliable information on dog food is difficult.  The internet is full of kooks and liars.  Many have a hidden agenda.  So pick a kibble you are comfortable with and offer it to him.  It is almost unknown for a dog to harm itself by refusing to eat.
