Question
QUESTION: I make homemade dog food for my 1-year-old Shih Tzu who needs a low protein diet.   It contains hamburger, rice, bread, chopped eggs, and calcium carb.   She does very well on it.   I started this because she turned her nose up to K/D and L/D most of the time.   The problem is my other two dogs, Bichon and Lhasa, do well on it too and I have to constantly make a new batch.   I am getting worn out.    Do you know of any other canned foods that  are tastier than the above-mentioned but are low protein and for seniors also (with kidney and liver disease)?  My shih tzu weighs about 6 lbs., the bichon is 17 lbs., and the lhasa is 13 lbs.   They all take NuVet vitamins.

ANSWER: Glad they are all taking the NuVET Supplements!  GREAT.
It would be best if you home-cook 4-5 days per week.  I have many pets being fed the Life's Abundance wet canned dog food that have had kidney issues.  They do home-cooked recipes and then alternate with the Life's Abundance.

I would do some rice with the canned Life's Abundance on top.  ( Just 2 days per week)
If you go on auto-ship, you get a discount... KIND of like how NuVet gives you a discount, too.

I hope the 2 days of Canned food will help give you a break from being the PET CHEF...
They will love the few days that you give them the Life's Abundance - both of the canned foods are low in protein and great Quality.

BEST wishes and Happy Cooking!

QUESTION: I should have also asked you:   Is it okay to add broth to the homemade food (as it is so dry)?   I usually just add water, but would  like to change it once in a while.   If it is okay, what kind of broth should I use?

ANSWER: Broth, BE aware of salt intake;  use a low sodium chicken broth.  It would be better to just add water.  If you do chicke broth do low fat besides the low sodium.

Have fun cooking !

QUESTION: Thank you so much for the previous two answers to my questions - they helped immensely.   I also would like to know the following:   Is there a low protein "dry food" available that would also be suitable for all three of my dogs, and that is high quality?  (I also could use low protein treats for them but the ones I have found in the stores they do not like.)  Also, regarding the above homemade canine recipe - I also add peas and carrots (fresh or frozen).   Are there any other vegetables that I could safely substitute?
