Best dog food to prevent recurrence of silica stones

Question
QUESTION: Our 10 yr old german shepherd had surgery 2 wks ago to remove a large number of bladder stones.  Analysis indicated they were silica stones.  We are trying to find a dog food, preferably a dry food, to prevent these from recurring.

ANSWER: I am going to save your question and check with my nutritionist about foods for silica stones. Your vet should be able to recommend something too and am surprised that he/she has not. Please give me a bit more info. Thanks, Sue

QUESTION: The vet is not that familiar with this type of stone as it only occurs in <5% of the types of stones. Of that 5% or less, >85% of the dogs are male German Shepherds.  We are trying to maintain a neutral urine pH and go for a mid-range protein percentage.  Our current "trial" is Wild Blue Lamb formula.  This is about 25% protein, limited veggies, grain-free.

Answer
Thanks for writing back. Just to let you know that after this response I will be out of touch for about a week. I am moving on Tuesday and will have no access (for a while) to the internet. It's a nightmare around here..just me and my three dogs moving 8 rooms etc. You can imagine. So, I just wanted to let you know that if you write back I will NOT be ignoring you, ok?

Ok,  here is what I would like to see you do. I have been in touch with a brilliant woman who is the CEO of a supplement company out West. She is dynamite and knows about dietary factors and how to supplement for almost any condition. She saved my Yorkies life with her dietary suggests and actual diets. She does NOT CHARGE because she adores animals (hers lived to be 19--both of them and never saw a vet--another story) and WILL GLADLY GUIDE YOU WITH YOUR POOCH'S PROBLEMS. Tell her that Sue Behlmar recommended that you write (Dixie, Henry and Buddy's mom--but she KNOWS ME) and tell her your situation in detail. She is extremely busy as you can imagine  but you will never look back once you hear from her Please contact her at this address:
DoniaSea@aol.com. Her name IS DONIA and this is not a typo.

Now having given you that referral I do know that the commercial diet of S/D (though not particularly nutritious) seems to help dogs with stones. Also you do need to feed your dog an alkalizing (vs acidic) diet. I even balance the acid/alkaline feeding for my NOW three healthy dogs. BUT YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON ALKALIZING FOODS THAT ARE DIGESTABLE TO DOGS. DONIA WILL DEFINITELY LEAD YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION HERE. Fruits, veggies, the right supplements etc. will all help your dog tremendously but before you start anything contact Donia. And tell her is is important in the subject line. I will contact her too and let her know that you may be writing, ok?

I realize you are looking for more advice than I currently gave you but this is the best I can do since I am not a nutritionist (Donia is) nor a vet. But over the years with sick dogs and learning about lousy commercial foods, I learned a lot about feeding. Please let me know how you make out. My personal email is: DazzlinDaawg@aol.com and my name is Sue.

All the best to you, for sure. Sue aka DazzlinDaawg@aol.com
